My priorities and ambitions for the European Union are to modernise and strengthen it.
1) Treaty reform
To this end, I am fully committed to reforming the European Treaties. With the enlargement of the EU and the growing geopolitical challenges, certain decisions are blocked by the unanimity rule. This is holding back progress on key issues such as defence and energy. Reforming these Treaties would enable Europe to act more quickly and effectively, while strengthening the role of the Parliament, for a more democratic system.
2) Setting up transnational lists
In 2022, the Parliament has proposed transnational lists for the European elections. Changing European electoral law would enable us to give a more European dimension to the elections, bringing citizens closer to the institutions. This is a far-reaching reform, especially at a time when many European democracies are seeing political parties come to power that advocate values and ideals that are the opposite of what we defend. In this new term of office, this is a fight that I will continue.
3) Digital, internal market and consumer protection
Digital technology is another focus of my commitment to the Parliament. As a member of the IMCO Committee, I am actively working on a number of key texts such as the AI Act, which aims to regulate artificial intelligence according to its risk, in order to protect citizens while encouraging innovation.
4) EU-UK Delegation
Finally, as Chair of the EU-UK Delegation, my role is to ensure that our post-Brexit relationship remains constructive, while ensuring that European interests are safeguarded. It is important for us Europeans to maintain strong links with this strategic partner. These issues are crucial to Europe’s future, and I am passionately committed to driving forward these reforms for the benefit of Europeans.
