“We are taking a very important step towards a Europe in which countries and peoples regain confidence in each other and look to their future together. These proposals bring hope back into the European project. There is no doubt that the benefits we will achieve tomorrow thanks to the Recovery and Transformation Plan justify going into debt together today.”

The plan presented by President Ursula von der Leyen marks the beginning of the legislature of change. In response to an extraordinary crisis caused by the pandemic, the European Union is providing equally extraordinary responses, looking to the future and to the well-being of our citizens, by asking the giants of the web and finance and the polluters to finance the resources needed for the Recovery Fund.

This proposal is the best response to those sovereignists and neo-nationalists who, throughout Europe, do not miss an opportunity to attack the EU, which, in their view, only serves Franco-German interests, and want it to disintegrate.

Thanks to the strong political impetus of the European Parliament, as well as the ambition and courage of Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel, today concrete and innovative instruments are finally being proposed to put in place genuine European solidarity to help those most affected by the crisis.

We are taking a very important step towards a Europe in which countries and peoples regain confidence in each other and look to their future together. These proposals bring hope back into the European project. There is no doubt that the benefits we will achieve tomorrow thanks to the Recovery and Transformation Plan justify going into debt together today.

Europe is there and stands alongside European families, businesses and territories. Today, European change is really beginning.
